Uploading Videos to YouTube without Letterboxes (Big Black Borders)

I was doing some occasional video editing, mostly using Adobe Premiere Elements.  Now and then, when I would upload a video to YouTube, it would have a letterbox.  That is, the video would be encased within a wide black rectangle.  This made the video smaller.  I didn't want it.  Getting rid of it was not easy.  This post presents a few notes in that direction.

One suggestion I encountered in a few different discussion threads was to add a certain tag to the Tags field available for each YouTube video.  The recommended tag was yt:crop=16:9.  I was supposed to type that into the Tags field, presumably separated from other tags by a comma, and that was supposed to expand the video.  I did find that this worked with one video, where I inserted that tag while the video was still uploading.  I found that it did not work with two other videos that were previoulsy uploaded, where I added the tag after the fact.  An alternative was to use yt:stretch=16:9.  That, too, failed with the previously uploaded videos.

I came across some Adobe suggestions on adjusting pixel and frame aspect ratios.  They didn't look terribly technical, and at some point I realized I would probably benefit from understanding them.

In the meantime, however, I found that I could sometimes resolve the issue by producing my video, in Premiere Elements, as an AVI, and then importing that AVI back into a new project.  Sometimes the re-importation would provoke Premiere Elements to ask if I wanted to correct my aspect ratio.  I didn't seem to lose any quality from this step, it didn't seem to require much additional time, and the MP4 that I would then output as my final project seemed to upload and display on YouTube without any letterbox problems.

Documenting Computer Work Onscreen - Second Try

I had previously used my Shotshooter.bat batch file to capture screenshots once or more per second, and had combined them into an IrfanView slideshow .exe to display a timelapse account of what I had been doing on the computer during a certain period of time.  I preferred to create a regular video file rather than an executable, and I also wanted to be able to add music, narration, or other audio.  So I tried again.

The problem wasn't video capture per se.  I had purchased a copy of Debut for that, after mixed results with freeware alternatives.  The problem was getting from the raw Debut output to the final video.  When I would import the Debut .avi into a video editor like Adobe Premiere Elements or CyberLink PowerDirector, the video quality would be seriously degraded.  It was possibly a problem with a simple setting in the editing program, but I hadn't yet figured out the solution.  At this point, for whatever reason, the resulting video of events on my computer's monitor was so poor as to be unreadable.

But let me back up.  Here's how I started.  I decided to try capturing my work in writing an essay.  It would wind up being a one-page document, so the whole thing was visible onscreen in Microsoft Word.  I had Word set to remember changes, so after hours of editing, I held down the Ctrl-Z key combination to keep undoing changes until I was back at the beginning.  (Before doing that, I saved a copy of the text.  One false keystroke would have destroyed the trail, and my essay would have been lost.)  When I was back at the beginning, I started the screen capture, using Debut.  Then, in Word, I held down the Ctrl-Y key combination to redo everything I had done, at a very rapid pace, while Debut was capturing.  I think I had set Debut to capture at seven frames per second (fps), so as to keep the .avi file somewhat smaller than it would have been at 30 fps.  When it was done, I stopped Debut and saved the .avi.

Now came the hard part.  Adobe and CyberLink weren't the only ones having problems with the Debut .avi output.  Media Player Classic (MPC) would likewise display that .avi in a severely distorted form.  In other trials, MPC played the audio but gave me only a black screen for the video.  QuickTime did just the opposite, playing the video but crapping out on the audio after a few seconds.  But for some reason, VLC and Microsoft's Windows Media Player (WMP) had no problem with it.  It was not clear why.  I would have guessed that my codecs needed updating, but I had just installed the latest K-Lite Mega Pack.

After much playing around, I found that VirtualDub was able to add an audio track, adjust the length of the video to the length of that audio track, and produce a relatively small .avi (but, regrettably, not an .mpg or some other compressed format) that WMP would play.  This video was about four minutes long and, at a 250 kbps setting (Microsoft Video 1, quality 100), it was about 70MB.  That was still huge in comparison to the IrfanView output, but it was nice to have the audio option.  At that bitrate, the video contained fade-like artifacts.  That is, when I deleted or changed some text in the original video, it faded out rather than just instantly disappearing.  It actually wasn't a bad effect, and I didn't want to upload a 700MB video, so I left it at that for now.

There seemed to be some artistic possibilities for this technique.  At some points, the beat of the music would coincide with the disappearance of lines of text, as if there were a rhythm to the editing.  Maybe there was, in some cosmic sense.

The remaining question was whether anyone else would be able to view this video.  I wasn't sure how it would turn out on YouTube.  So I uploaded and tried it.  It looked OK in full-screen mode on YouTube, viewed in Firefox and also in Chrome.  I downloaded it from YouTube, using NetVideoHunter.  The download was in .mp4 format.  It still didn't play right in WMP, but it played better in QuickTime, and it was less than half the size of the .avi I had uploaded.  So I thought perhaps I could have uploaded the 700MB version and used YouTube to compress it for me.

I still didn't have a straightforward process for putting high-quality screen capture video into a format that I could edit in a normal video editing program like Adobe Premiere Elements.  It seemed that, next time, I might try recording my original video in something other than Debut, to explore the possibility that that particular program had saved my video in an odd format that Premiere Elements and other programs couldn't handle.  I could also explore rapid Shotshooter screenshots, at least to the extent that my computer would be able to save multiple screenshots per second.  Then maybe I could also try using Premiere Elements, instead of IrfanView, to stitch those screenshots together into a time-compressed but visually high-quality production to which I could also add audio.

Ubuntu 9.10, VMware Workstation 7: Failed to Open Sound Device (Workaround)

In previous posts, I tried fixing error messages that I was getting in a Windows XP virtual machine (VM) running on VMware Workstation 6.5.2 on Ubuntu Linux, version 9.04.  I didn't know, at that time, whether some of my problems stemmed from having done an upgrade rather than a clean install of Ubuntu.  Now I found myself facing the same problem again, after a clean install of both Ubuntu 9.10 (Jaunty Jackalope) and VMware Workstation 7.

The problem was as follows:  if I checked the "Connect at power on" option, then audio would not run in the VM until (in full screen mode) I went into VM > Removable Devices > Sound Card > Connect; but when I did that, I would get this error message:

Failed to open sound device /dev/audio: Device or resource busy.  Failed to connect virtual device sound.

One recent discussion seemed to suggest that the problem was that Flash Player and/or Alsa audio.  I suspended my VMs and rebooted the computer.  When it rebooted, I made sure that Firefox was not running.  I resumed the VM and audio played OK in IrfanView.  I started Firefox inside the VM (i.e., in Windows XP) and played a YouTube video.  The audio was still OK in IrfanView.  I started a second session of Workstation and resumed a different VM in that session.  The manual sound card connection went OK; and there, too, I could play audio without stuttering.  The audio in the second VM was not as good; it had some static.

With those two VMs open, I started Firefox in Ubuntu (i.e., not in a WinXP VM).  I played another YouTube video.  Now I got an error message, and audio would not play in IrfanView within the VM.  I tried the other VM; same thing.  The error message was "Failed to open sound device /dev/audio: Device or resource busy.  Sound will be disconnected."  I went back to Ubuntu and killed Firefox.  Now I was able to connect the sound card and play audio inside the two VMs, same as before, complete with mini-stutters in the second one.  I started Firefox again in Ubuntu.  The audio was still OK inside the VM.  If I was playing audio in IrfanView in the VM and then went into a YouTube page in Firefox, the audio would not play in the latter.  I had to restart Firefox to get its YouTube audio to play, and then, as before, I was not able to hear audio inside the VM.  It worked the same way if I played a YouTube video in Opera rather than in Firefox.  So it seemed that the problem (which has apparently been around for years) continued to be within VMware Workstation.

For the time being, the solution seems to be either (a) to watch videos and other webpages that use Flash, do it in a browser session that is running inside your VM, not in a browser running in Ubuntu, or (b) after watching a video or otherwise using Flash in Ubuntu, kill the program that used it (e.g., Firefox) and manually reconnect with your sound card inside the VM.

Video: Ten Years of Income and Poverty Fluctuations in Indiana

I used Epi Info to make a map of some statistical information from Indiana for 1998.  I made another map of the same data for 1999, and so on through 2007.  I treated the maps as still photos and made a video of them, which is now available on YouTube.  This post explains what the video shows.

The video shows a map of Indiana and its counties over a ten-year period, from 1998 through 2007 inclusive.  The counties are represented in various colors.  The colors show whether counties fared well or poorly during each of those years.  The best outcomes are in deep green.  Nearly neutral outcomes are on the boundary between light green and yellow.  The worst outcomes range from yellow through orange to red.

The calculations behind these maps begin with year-by-year data from the U.S. Census Bureau.  The specific data sources used are described in the other post.   These maps show the relationship between two streams of county-by-county data.  One is the per capita income, adjusted for inflation.  The other is the number of people in poverty.

For both of these data streams, I calculated rates of change.  So, for example, the video begins with 1998.  Warren County, at the left edge of the state, appears in red.  Red indicates an extreme divergence between changes in per capita income and in poverty rates.  In most if not all cases, moreover, red indicates that the divergence is undesirable.

In the case of Warren County in 1998, the situation is as follows.  Per capita income dropped very slightly (i.e., by only 0.2%), from $23,577 in 1997 to $23,527 in 1998.  Unfortunately, the number of persons in poverty rose 13.5%, from 644 in 1997 to 731 in 1998.  So there was not a general recession or other drop in earnings shared equally by everyone.  Indeed, the stable per capita income raises the question of how many people actually experienced an increase in income.

Warren County stands out, in 1998, because the ratio of its change in poverty rate to its change in per capita income was greater than 60:1.  It stands out in red because that change signals bad news for poor people.  It would have stood out in green if the ratio had been 60:1 in poor people’s favor – if, that is, there had been a slight increase in income and a dramatic decrease in poverty.  In that case, it would seem that the county channeled much of its additional prosperity, that year, into an improvement in the conditions of the poor.

The color scheme used on these maps, then, ranges from red down through orange to yellow, as the bad news for poor people becomes progressively less bad, and from yellowish green up through deep green as the good news for poor people becomes progressively better.  The color gradations go in steps of twenty:  that is, red is for a ratio of worse than (negative) 60:1; a dark shade of orange accounts for ratios between 40:1 and 60:1; a lighter shade of orange represents ratios between 20:1 and 40:1; and so on down to zero and then up through the deepest green at 60:1.  There is nothing magical about those particular gradations.  They were chosen for simplicity.  The seas of yellow and green that appear in a few years depicted in the video suggest that closer gradations might have provided more information.

One step I took that now appears to have been a mistake was to eliminate a half-dozen extreme values that I considered outliers.  Had I not done that, there would have been a handful of additional counties shown in the deepest reds and greens throughout this ten-year period.

This presentation does not purport to be definitive, or even scholarly.  Along the lines suggested in the refinements just mentioned, a high-quality product would call for manual analysis of a number of counties, like the analysis of Warren County provided above, so as to insure that representative and appropriate colors were used for all counties.  Data and calculations used here have not been carefully proofread.  The spot checks that I have done do seem to indicate accuracy in the basic calculations.

One technical refinement that will become more feasible in future years, as data become more readily available, could involve a finer-grained analysis by zip code and/or census tract.  Another refinement worth considering would be to overlay an indication of population centers.  Also, if the video were converted to, say, a PDF, it would also be possible to create links or tooltips for each county, so that mousing over or clicking on a county would bring up or lead to the underlying data.

The video suggests some areas for further inquiry.  It appears, in my review thus far, that a number of the most extreme contrasts appear in counties in the regions of Chicago, Evansville, Indianapolis, and Louisville – and also around West Lafayette.  Also, it seems that some counties tend to experience the same trends:  they are the same colors as one or more of their neighbors in most if not all of the years depicted.  There also appear to be years of greater and lesser homogeneity among the counties – such as the contrast between 1998 and 1999.  Closer investigation of sharp divergences among neighboring counties (such as in 2004) could also lead to indicia of balkanization, where large employers or governmental policies yield marked departures from (and possibly distortions in) the general tendency in the state for the year.

As noted in the other post, there were some technical difficulties in the preparation of this video.  It was, nonetheless, an interesting project.  I hope the links provided in these posts, and the techniques used in the video, lead me and/or others to undertake further analyses of this kind.

How to View the YouTube Videos for the Top 100 Songs of the Year

This posts may help you to watch the music videos for the Top 100 songs of 2008 (I think they're the second half of the list, below) without having to look them up or open them individually. Here are the steps, but with luck you can skip most of these and go to the list of URLs, below. 1. Prepare a list of URLs. Do this using e.g., the list at About.com. In your browser, view the page source. Copy it all as text to e.g., Microsoft Word. Sort the paragraphs; delete everything that doesn't have a reference to YouTube; do some global searching and replacing (optionally using a macro) to remove everything except the YouTube URLs. 2. Put the URLs in batch file form. This means (a) do a global search and replace to put the appropriate command at the start of each line, with optional (probably advisable) quotation marks; (b) save in Notepad as a text file; (c) unless your browser can handle 200 video tabs at once, cut and paste this text file in pieces to another text file with a .BAT extension. Example: URL-List.txt has all 200 URLs, stated in command-line form (see 200 examples below); Open-URLs.bat has 20 of those 200; double-click on the latter and run it. 3. Get your browser in shape to run the batch file. I use Tab Mix Plus and set it to make sure that all tabs open in the same window, so I'm not opening dozens of distinct Firefox sessions, which would be a load on the computer. 4. Run the batch file. Wait for the videos to all download, and then you can watch them at your leisure. Repeat with the next set until you've worked through the whole list. I created a single list for 2007 and 2008 before I thought of writing this post, so the following list combines them both. About.com doesn't seem to have links to videos for anything before 2007 at this time, so that's why I did only those two years. If you understand the basic idea of the foregoing steps, you can probably just copy and paste the following lines into Notepad and run pieces of them as a batch file (see above). You may want to have Firefox already open before you run the batch file. start firefox.exe "http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_aLFmVwbxro" start firefox.exe "http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_hd-uklv-5g"
